Nominations can still be submitted until April 12

Nominations have already been received for the election of the Lord Mayor, the City Council, the district mayors and the other members of the district councils. However, the city of Jena is hoping for even more candidates. Nominations have already been submitted for all elections, according to the Jena election management. However, there should be significantly more candidates in order to fill all positions in electable city politics.

It could prove to be particularly disadvantageous in the election of local district councillors if there are not enough nominations. This is because, contrary to the previous procedure, this time no names may be written on the ballot papers if there are fewer candidates than seats on the district council. The council would then have to work with a correspondingly reduced number of people.

Do not wait until the deadline to submit proposals

Nominations for the upcoming local elections for the city of Jena can still be submitted to election officer Matthias Bettenhäuser until April 12, 2024, 6.00 pm. He recommends not waiting until shortly before the deadline to submit nominations, as the documents still need to be checked and any corrections made afterwards. It is possible to rectify any deficiencies until April 22, 6.00 pm. On April 23, 5 p.m., the election committee will meet in public at the new citizen service center on Engelplatz to decide on the admission of nominations.

EU citizens must be entered in the electoral register

Election Commissioner Bettenhäuser also reminds voters that non-German EU citizens who have moved to Jena and are eligible to vote and who wish to vote in the European Parliament elections for the first time in Germany must apply to be entered in the electoral register. The form is available on the Federal Returning Officer's website and must be completed, signed and submitted to the city's Citizens' Service Office by May 19 at the latest.
