21.01.2025

A residential and commercial quarter is to be built on the site of the current Columbus-Center in Winzerla. The second phase of public participation is now starting with a new interpretation and an information event. The preliminary draft of the development plan was already available for public inspection in June 2024.

Public interpretation

The draft of the project-related development plan VBB-AM 08 "Wohn- und Geschäftsquartier Friedrich-Zucker-Straße" is available for inspection until 28.02.2025. The Jena City Council approved this draft at its meeting on 18.12.2024. The plan can be viewed both online in the city hall portal of the city of Jena and on site in the administration building Am Anger 26, 2nd floor, during the following opening hours

  • Monday: 08:00 - 12:00 and 13:00 - 16:00
  • Tuesday: 08:00 - 12:00 and 13:00 - 16:00
  • Thursday: 08:00 - 12:00 and 13:00 - 18:00
  • Friday: 08:00 - 12:00.

Information event

The plans will also be explained at a public event. This will take place on 19.02.2025 at 18:00 in the auditorium of the Friedrich-Schiller-Grundschule at Hugo-Schrade-Straße 3 in Winzerla. If necessary, the event will take place as part of a meeting of the local district council.

"The development of the residential and commercial quarter at the Columbus-Center is an important step for the city of Jena and our citizens. We want to create a place that not only offers modern living space, but also creates space for retail, commerce and services that enrich life in Winzerla. Public participation is particularly important to us, as we want to actively involve the opinions and ideas of local residents. I cordially invite all interested parties to take part in this process and work with us on sustainable neighborhood development," says Christian Gerlitz, Mayor and Head of Urban Development and Environment, promoting the project.

Background

The aim of the planning is to achieve sustainable neighborhood development on the Columbus Center site, which is in need of renovation. The plan is to construct a building complex with three sections and a further building to the east, which will provide space on the first floor, second floor and part of the second floor for commercial and retail space, including doctors' surgeries and offices. Around 70 residential units of various sizes will be built on the floors above. The three parts of the western building complex will be a maximum of 4, 6 and 10 storeys high. The building to the east will be a maximum of 6 storeys high. A two-storey underground parking garage for residents and guests is also planned.

The outdoor area of the site will offer a high quality of stay: Squares, fountains and attractive greenery will invite people to linger and will be open to the public. A passageway will also provide direct access to the adjacent bus stop.
