Peregrine falcon offspring at the combined heat and power plant in Jena-Burgau

15.05.2020

Despite the loss of the traditional nesting site on the chimney after 14 years, the peregrine falcons remain at the site in Jena-Burgau. A replacement nesting site was occupied in 2020 and three young birds were hatched there.

30 young falcons since 2006

Peregrine falcons have been breeding on the 225m high chimney of the thermal power station in Jena-Burgau since 2006. The breeding was not successful every year. In 14 years, until the chimney, which had been out of operation since 1995, was demolished in 2019, a total of 30 young falcons were successfully raised!

In order to preserve the peregrine falcon population in Jena, the management of the combined heat and power plant, the Arbeitskreis Wanderfalkenschutz e.V. (Peregrine Falcon Protection Working Group) and the Jena Lower Nature Conservation Authority agreed on the creation of three replacement nesting aids for this strictly protected species and the measures were implemented by the employees of the combined heat and power plant.

May 2020 makes everything new

On 04.05.2020, three young peregrine falcons were found in one of the replacement nesting aids. The young birds were around 2 to 3 days old at the time and were being fed by an adult bird.

The adoption of a replacement nesting aid was therefore successful. We now hope for further years of breeding success!
