Pouring day 2.0

23.08.2021

Due to climate change, long periods of hot weather with little rain will occur more frequently in the future. This means additional stress for street trees in particular. Although trees can often withstand dry periods for longer due to their deep roots, water can often no longer penetrate deep into the soil due to the narrow soil surface and additional compaction caused by car and pedestrian traffic.

Under the motto: "postponed is not canceled", an association of various partners in Lobeda, the AWO multi-generation house, the LISA meeting place, the AWO LebensWeGe residential park, the Lobeda district office, the REWE Markt Antje Eismann OHG and many committed citizens called for Watering Day 2.0 yesterday from 9 am. The initiative was supported from 5 pm by the Winzerla volunteer fire department and the tree care department of Kommunalservice Jena (KSJ).

On Watering Day 2.0, interested citizens were able to actively participate in tree care using watering cans and handcarts provided by the initiative. The volunteer fire department provided the necessary water. In addition, young and old alike enjoyed clearing the existing tree grates of garbage and watering them accordingly.

In addition to coarse garbage, the helpers most frequently found carelessly discarded cigarette butts in the tree grates. The latter contain toxic substances such as arsenic, lead, copper, plastics, chromium and nicotine. These are carried into the soil by rainwater and cause lasting damage to the tree or shrub in question, reports Sandra Kleeberg, Head of Tree Care at KSJ.

Even with relatively small maintenance measures, you can make it noticeably easier for "your" tree to survive in the city and thus ensure a good climate in your district in the long term. Do you have any questions or would you like to do something concrete for urban trees in your area? Then we will be happy to give you suggestions and/or introduce you to the concept of tree sponsorship. Nobody has to worry about being "overburdened"!

By the way: The next watering day will take place on 18.09.2021 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon as part of the Jena Volunteer Day.
