Public spaces for independent events
The independent arts and culture scene in Jena has grown over the years and is an integral part of the city. Young, progressive and diverse - this is how the independent scene in Jena presents itself. Organized in initiatives or associations, a wide variety of cultural events are often created in the form of open-air events.
In the past, this has not always been without conflict. Events were not registered. Residents reported disturbances of the peace. In the end, there was frustration on all sides.
"A young city needs outdoor areas for art and culture, which are in high demand, especially during the pandemic. We want to work together to strike a balance between nature and noise protection on the one hand and attractive offers on the other," says Mayor and Head of Urban Development Christian Gerlitz.
In future, more space is to be given to those involved in the independent scene. To this end, representatives of the Department of Urban Development, the Agency for Temporary Use and the Socio-Cultural Advisory Board have set up a working group. In order to stage plays, smaller concerts or larger open-air events, various spaces in the city are currently being examined and solutions developed together with representatives of the independent scene. Discussions are progressing well and the first events are already being planned.
Due to the general restrictions still in place as a result of the pandemic, initially only open-air events are planned in compliance with the applicable rules.
"Especially in difficult times, and of course beyond, it is particularly important to strengthen art and culture and to offer the independent scene prospects and opportunities to develop," says Katrin Hitziggrad from Blank, Agency for Interim Use.
The aim is to be able to identify suitable locations for possible events as early as early summer and then test their implementation at trial events.
