Shared responsibility for safety in Winzerla and all districts
The latest publication by the SPD parliamentary group on improving the security situation in Winzerla has been well received by the city council. Mayor Benjamin Koppe emphasizes that the concerns of the citizens are taken seriously and that existing prevention structures are constantly being developed.
"We take the concerns of the people of Winzerla very seriously. Older citizens in particular deserve our special protection. The issue of security in the districts, particularly with regard to burglaries and fraud, is an integral part of the regular cooperation meetings between the public order department and the police," explains Koppe.
The city of Jena supports the existing crime prevention measures, even though this is primarily the responsibility of the police by law. The cooperation works very well: the police are present in the districtswith contact area officers and prevention officers and are in close contact with social institutions and housing companies. In this way, crime prevention knowledge is passed on in a targeted manner and specific needs are addressed.
For example, the municipal housing company Jenawohnen regularly provides information on security issues in its own tenant magazine, and problematic situations, such as in Winzerla, are specifically addressed at the city-wide security conferences. Public communication between the city, police and other partners is also coordinated and continuous.
In general, the municipal housing company attaches great importance to safety in the neighborhoods, especially in Winzerla. Jenawohnen regularly provides information via various channels on how each and every individual can contribute to safety in the building, for example by locking front doors or behaving carefully in the entrance area. Information flyers on burglary protection and access control are also provided. There is also a gradual switch to electronic locking systems at house entrances, which significantly increase the level of security. In the evenings and at weekends, a security service is also on duty on behalf of Jenawohnen.
If there are special needs or information material is required, the city expressly encourages people to contact the police directly. The contact area officers in particular are available as direct contacts on site. They are ready to provide information and respond to specific problems, uncertainties or fears of citizens.
The police have now identified a large number of different fraudulent approaches, particularly in the criminal field of so-called "shock calls". Of around 150 cases registered in Jena since 2022, only a small percentage have actually been successful. Among other things, this is a result of the police's significantly intensified prevention work, which is now effective across many channels and has contributed to a noticeable increase in awareness, especially in the particularly vulnerable age group of over 60-year-olds.
At the same time, fraud offenses are constantly changing. Increasingly, younger people and companies are also becoming the focus of perpetrators, for example through cybercrime, the use of artificial intelligence or professionally prepared investment fraud. The security authorities are aware that every single case is one too many. Such acts often leave people feeling helpless and helpless, and often ashamed. This makes it all the more important to continuously educate people, raise awareness at an early stage and ensure consistent prosecution.
"I welcome the fact that the SPD is once again taking up this issue. It is important that we keep public awareness high through such initiatives and continue to work together to strengthen people's sense of security in all parts of the city. At the same time, we always take such information as an opportunity to further develop existing offers and take up new impulses," concluded Koppe.
The city administration will compile and publish further details and background information on the subject in response to the SPD's minor question to the Lord Mayor.
