Start of awarding the prizes for the Jena Façade Prize competition 2021
Thanks to private sponsors, the city of Jena was once again able to award the Jena Façade Prize for the 29th time this year. A total of €11,000 was available as prize money, divided between the main prize, the recognitions and the special prize for energy efficiency. Only awards without prize money will be given to public contractors and larger players in the housing market.
By the beginning of October, 10 applications had been received. These cover a wide range of projects. From smaller and larger private residential buildings to public institutions and mixed-use buildings, the range extends all the way to commercial buildings. On November 11, 2021, the nine-member jury, which consisted of representatives of the sponsors, the city administration and a member of the architectural advisory board, convened. Due to the difficult situation regarding the organization of a central award ceremony, the jury decided once again this year to present the prizes individually on a small scale at the respective prize-winning property. In addition to the main prize, the jury awarded commendations, recognitions and the special energy prize.
This week's award ceremonies kicked off today in the form of an award to the city's own municipal real estate company, Kommunale Immobilien Jena, for the newrowing boat house at Burgauer Weg 7 (design: ETB BAUPROJEKT Architektur- und Ingenieurbüro Jena GmbH, Jena). The certificate and award plaque were presented by Elisabeth Wackernagel on behalf of the sponsorsand Henrik Neumann (Head of Urban Planning) on behalf of the city council. The jury particularly praised the skillful composition of the materials, with which a high-quality design translation of the leisure use into an appropriate architectural language was achieved . The proximity to the natural surroundings of the Saale andtheadaptation to the existing terrain profile attract the viewer's attention, so that the new building for the Jenaer Ruder- und Seesportverein e.V. blends in perfectly with the boathouse architecture along Burgauer Weg.
The special energy prize was also awarded to JAT GmbH for the new construction of the technology complex at Buchaer Straße 1 (planning: pbr Planungsbüro Rohling AG, Jena) . Steffen Kind (Steffen Kind - Energieberatung und Gebäudeanalytik) and Henrik Neumann presented the prize money of €1,000 and the award plaque on behalf of the sponsors. The project is ambitious for a commercial building. Overall, it has succeeded very well in combining innovative technology with purpose-built industrial architecture, ecological principles and its own environmentally conscious goals. The following technologies were used, among others: Geothermal energy, a highly efficient heat pump, heating and cooling via passive component activation and a rainwater harvesting system to irrigate the green roof with cooling function.
