Start of the smart city strategy phase

09.03.2022

@Your city. Your Smart City Jena.

Jena starts with public participation for the Smart City strategy phase

From March to June, all Jena residents can find out about the status of the strategy and get involved in various topics.

The participation of Jena's urban society is an important building block during the strategy phase of the Smart City process. The aim is to provide information about the objectives of the strategy for the individual fields of action and to take on board the perspectives of citizens. In this way, the next steps can be further developed and the strategy with its objectives and measures can be specified.

From March to June, the people of Jena will have the opportunity to provide feedback. This can be done, for example, through ongoing online participation via Mitmachen - Bürgerbeteiligung Smart City Jena(link is external). Events will also be held on various specific topics such as education, mobility, digital administration and many more - everyone present is invited to join in the discussion directly.

Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche emphasized: "The Smart City model project touches on all areas of social, economic and civic life and we therefore want to include the citizens' perspective on all topics. The Jena of tomorrow is not only being created on the many urban construction sites that we are currently advancing, but also in the digital space and with the networking there. That's what Smart City is all about. The Jena of tomorrow needs the ideas of its citizens in order to be integrative and sustainable and to develop digital solutions close to people's needs."

Head of Digitalization Benjamin Koppe adds: "The Smart City project is a central building block in making our city fit for the future and maintaining and expanding the city of light with its strengths. We want to lead the way with innovative projects, make digitalization tangible and actively shape the future. The planned projects should have added value for our urban society and make it easier for us to live together. Citizen participation plays a crucial role in this and is an important component of the ongoing process."

In 2020, Jena successfully applied for funding in the competition for the nationwide "Smart Cities Model Projects" program. Under the slogan "Jena digitizes, learns and shares. Our city creates and uses knowledge", an overall strategy has since been developed that identifies key topics for Jena and combines ongoing projects with new ideas for all areas of life in Jena.

Initial goals have already been identified for the strategy's five fields of action. This was done in various working groups in which a wide range of stakeholders participated. One central infrastructure project, for example, is WISSENsAllmende Jena, an urban data platform that not only collects and structures data, but also contains tools that make the collected knowledge accessible to the entire urban community, with or without special prior knowledge. This infrastructure is to be linked with many other projects. These include digital projects in the areas of urban development, environment, transport, education, culture, social affairs, business and science as well as digital administration.
