Surveys on the rent index begin

Around 7,500 households in Jena will receive questionnaires on the rent index by post in the coming days. Residents are asked to complete and return the questionnaires by May 2.

The rent index provides information on the local comparative rent in Jena, which is usually paid for different types of apartments of a comparable type, size, furnishings, quality and location. It therefore serves as a guide for anyone looking for accommodation, but also for landlords, when negotiating rents and is intended to present the rent levels on the Jena housing market in a transparent and clear manner. On this basis, tenants can find out more easily whether a demanded rent is justified.

Qualified rent index in Jena since 2013

The fact that Jena has a qualified rent index based on scientific methodology is the result of a decision by the city council. This important instrument of municipal housing policy has been in place since 2013. The rent index must be updated every four years - as was the case this year. This requires extensive data collection from both landlords and tenants.

The Jena Tenants' Association and Haus & Grund Jena provide support in compiling the rent index. The evaluation is carried out by DOMUS Consult Wirtschaftsberatungsgesellschaft mbH, to whom all completed questionnaires should be returned. A stamped envelope is enclosed, there are no costs. Participation in the survey has been mandatory since 2022 with the new rent index reform law. The city of Jena asks all those contacted to participate, as this is the only way to create a representative overview of the rental price data.
