Symbolic ground-breaking ceremony for Naumburger Strasse

26.02.2026

With a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony, the city of Jena has given the go-ahead for one of the largest infrastructure projects of the coming years: the ground-breaking extension of Naumburger Straße.

Today, Thursday, 26.02.2026, Lord Mayor Thomas Nitzsche, Dirk Lange (Head of Urban Development and Environment), Uwe Feige (Plant Manager of Kommunalservice Jena (KSJ)), Christopher Helbig (Head of Civil Engineering & Urban Space at KSJ), Andreas Möller (Managing Director of Jenaer Nahverkehrs), Kristin Weiß (Managing Director of Stadtwerke Jena Netze), Jürgen Hofmann (Chairman of the JenaWasser Association), Dr. Waldemar Kühner (Mayor of Zwätzen), Stephan Kühn (Managing Director of HI Bauprojekt GmbH), Jörg Romankiewicz (Branch Manager and authorized signatory of TS BAU GMBH) and Peter Kober (Managing Director of STREICHER Tief- und Ingenieurbau Jena GmbH & Co. KG) took part in the official launch.

"With the extension of the streetcar to Himmelreich and the simultaneous renewal of the road, pavements and cycle paths as well as the supply and disposal lines, we are taking a holistic approach to infrastructure. We are making targeted investments in efficient mobility, modern networks and a better quality of life. This is a sustainable strengthening of the entire north of Jena," emphasizes Lord Mayor Thomas Nitzsche.

The construction project

Construction work will begin on Monday, 02.03.2026, and is expected to last until June 2029. The entire construction site covers the area of Naumburger Straße between the junction with Flurweg and the northern junction with Carl-Orff-Straße. The project will be implemented in several construction phases.

The first section stretches from the end of Jena to the junction with Carl-Orff-Straße Süd. The construction period for this is scheduled from March 2026 to June 2027.

Traffic routing during the construction period

From 02.03. to 30.11.2026, Naumburger Straße will be fully closed between the southern Carl-Orff-Straße and the end of Jena.

During the entire construction period, there will be a large-scale detour in both directions from Camburg / Rodameuschel via the L1070 to Trotz and from Trotz on the B7 via Bürgel to Jena. This applies in particular to heavy goods vehicles. The Carl-Orff-Straße Süd junction remains open to traffic.

Current information on closures and detour can befound in the city of Jena's roadworks report.

Effects on bus services

Initially, streetcar services will not be affected as work will begin in the northern section where the new route is being built. However, there will be restrictions on regional bus services operated by JES Verkehrsgesellschaft: routes 420 and 426 will be diverted from Porstendorf in both directions via Golmsdorf and Kunitz to Jena. Selected journeys on route 420 will run via Himmelreich and serve the Zwätzen, Schleife stop with a connection to streetcar line 1. Route 422 will run via Rödigen during the construction period.

Joint project

The ground-up expansion is a comprehensive joint project by the city of Jena, Kommunalservice Jena, Jenaer Nahverkehrs, Stadtwerke Jena Netze and JenaWasser. In addition to the extension of the streetcar line to Himmelreich, roads, footpaths and cycle paths as well as central supply and disposal lines along Naumburger Straße are being renewed. The aim is to sustainably improve mobility and quality of life in the north of Jena.
