Thanks to the election workers

24.02.2025
Chief Electoral Officer Matthias Bettenhäuser thanks the around 1,200 volunteers who ensured that the Bundestag elections ran smoothly on Sunday. According to Bettenhäuser, the good mix of experienced and new volunteers worked very well. At the same time, he asked for understanding that not everyone who had declared their willingness to help was deployed. With around 1,800 registrations, there were significantly more interested parties than there were places in the polling stations. Nevertheless, this is a great sign for democracy, which will hopefully be seen again in the next elections, said Bettenhäuser.

Thanks to the good preparatory work over the past few weeks and the good support of the electoral boards on election day, almost everything went extremely smoothly on election Sunday, said Bettenhäuser and his deputy Diana Kölbel. They also thanked the numerous employees of the city administration for their great commitment in the various areas of background logistics on election Sunday. Around 150 people were entrusted with very different tasks. Among other things, the Citizens' Services team sent out and distributed a total of just over 28,000 postal voting documents. Due to the tight deadlines, there were around 15,000 postal voting documents in one day alone at the start on February 5.

The teams in the polling districts and in the postal voting districts had counted the ballot papers by 9 p.m. on Sunday at the latest. "Like the entire election organization, this is also an outstanding team effort - especially considering that a total of 26,840 postal ballots were counted at the postal voting center in the Wenigenjena community school," said Bettenhäuser. Overall, the proportion of postal voters was 39.6 percent.
