Ukrainian pupils soon to travel on Jena buses

27.09.2023

Joint aid campaign by the city of Jena and Jena public transport

A bus from Jena will soon be transporting pupils in the Ukrainian town of Brovary. Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche and the Managing Director of Jenaer Nahverkehr, Andreas Möller, sent the decommissioned low-floor bus on its way today, Wednesday. In future, the vehicle will be used as a school bus in the local authority of Brovary, with which Erlangen and Jena signed a solidarity partnership agreement in March.

"One of the most important tasks on the ground in Ukraine is to gradually rebuild the infrastructure. I would like to thank Engagement Global for its financial support and Jena's local transport company, which is making an important contribution to giving the local people back some mobility in their everyday lives by donating the bus to Brovary," said Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche. The aid campaign is part of the "Municipal Partnerships with Ukraine" project, which is run by the Service Agency Communities in One World (SKEW) at Engagement Global. The non-profit organization covers 90 percent of the total costs, ten percent - a good 1,000 euros - is borne by the city of Jena.

One campaign among many

Nitzsche emphasized that the aid campaign is one of many support campaigns for Brovary, such as generators or fire engines from the city of Jena. "We want to show our twin city in Ukraine: We are here for you and stand by your side." On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Service Agency has been supporting a comprehensive network of municipal partnerships since 2015. Jena has been part of the network since the beginning of the war in Ukraine.

"We are also following the ongoing fighting in Ukraine and are shocked at how many people are losing their lives in this senseless war. And at the same time, valuable infrastructure is being destroyed," said Möller. Local transport in Jena was therefore very happy to support this fundraising campaign. And, of course, he is delighted "that this bus is being put to a very useful use once again."
