Urgently needed generators reach Brovary
Thanks to the city of Jena's fundraising campaign for the Ukrainian twin town of Brovary, an urgently needed generator has now been purchased. The diesel generator (100kVA) was delivered directly from the dealer in Kempen to Brovary, where it was received last week. Since the fundraising campaign began in mid-February, donations totaling 24,156 euros have been collected.
"The great willingness to donate shows how strong the solidarity in our city is. I would like to thank all the people in Jena who have contributed with their support so that we can help our partners in Brovary in a very tangible way",
said Lord Mayor Thomas Nitzsche.
Generator from the Jena fire department delivered
A generator from the Jena fire department was also delivered. The idea of making the tried and tested device (GDR model) available was the result of technical coordination between the fire departments of the two cities. The generator has an internal value of 2,500 euros, which was also paid for by the donations. This generator has now also reached Brovary.
The generators are needed to ensure the energy supply to public service facilities even in the event of infrastructure failures. Targeted attacks on the energy supply have severely damaged the local grid and endangered the heat and water supply for thousands of residents.
Further relief efforts for the Ukrainian twin city
At the same time, further aid campaigns are underway to support the citizens of Brovary. Jena and Erlangen have jointly organized the transport of rehabilitation equipment to Ukraine. The first delivery of rehabilitation beds and bedside cabinets for the central hospital in Brovary took place in mid-February. At the beginning of last week, a team from Brovary picked up two minibuses with wheelchair ramps in Jena for transportation to the twin town, which have now reached Brovary. Petro Babych, Deputy Mayor of Brovary, was part of the delegation:
"We sincerely thank Jena, Erlangen and GIZ for the support provided. The rehabilitation equipment will significantly strengthen our clinic in Brovary. Our social welfare office will use the minibuses as social cabs in future. People with disabilities can submit their mobility requests to us via a special portal. We have a total of 3,000 users, around a third of whom have suffered permanent disabilities as a result of their military service or combat missions. Previously, we only had one minibus available for these purposes, so the two new vehicles are a huge relief."
He also thanked all the citizens of Jena for the donations that were used to purchase the generators.
"These are an important support for our municipal infrastructure."
The aid packages are provided and financed by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH as part of the "Improving Civil Protection and Reconstruction in Municipal Partnerships with Ukraine" program. GIZ selected the aid packages after coordinating the needs with the Ukrainian partners. The German municipalities undertake to organize and bear the costs of transporting the relief supplies to their Ukrainian partner municipality.
