Violence must be punished swiftly

20.01.2020

As previously reported, there was a verbal and later physical altercation between a group of foreign youths and a German youth in the area of the Goethe Galerie on Friday, 17.01.2020 at around 20:30. According to initial findings, an unknown youth from the group hit the head of the injured party with a glass bottle. He suffered serious head injuries and had to be treated immediately in the emergency room of Jena Hospital. The police promptly questioned witnesses, followed up leads and secured evidence. In the course of these investigations, three perpetrators of Afghan origin were identified the following day. The responsible public prosecutor's office in Gera has taken over the investigation.

Jena's head of security, Benjamin Koppe, exchanged information with the police authorities on Monday.

It is of urgent interest to the city that the matter be cleared up quickly. We will take vigorous action against all forms of violence. The city will do its part with evening community order operations and preventive social work.

Head of the police inspection service Rico Schimmel adds:

'Independently of the ongoing investigations, we as police will increase patrol activity together with the city of Jena in order to prevent the commission of such crimes among young people. The cooperation with the municipal level is excellent here.
