Visit from twin town Lugoj
Representatives from both cities want to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the partnership between Jena and Lugoj in Romania on Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at the start of the city council meeting in the town hall. The partnership, which was first sealed with a contract in 1983, has been kept alive by the two cities to this day through intensive exchanges. A 16-strong delegation from the south-west of Romania will travel to Thuringia for the anniversary. For eleven of the guests, it will be their first stay in Jena.
After the ceremonial welcome on Wednesday, numerous talks and visits are on the agenda - including with Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche and members of the Association for the Promotion of the Lugoj-Jena Town Twinning. Representatives of the Economic Development Agency will introduce the delegation to Jena as a business location.
The Romanian city of 50,000 inhabitants has received funding of 150 million euros from the EU for the construction of a new hospital. The Director of the Municipal Hospital and the Mayor of Lugoj therefore want to discuss their experiences with representatives of Jena University Hospital during the construction of the new hospital. The construction project in Lugoj is due to start in around nine months.
Professional exchange
Another item on the agenda is an exchange between the responsible parties from both cities on topics such as the sewage treatment plant, street lighting, parking, green space maintenance and street cleaning. Dr. Roland Petersohn, principal of Angergymnasium, will be on hand to discuss educational issues. Matthias Weißbrodt, sports development officer for the city of Jena, will answer guests' questions during a tour of the sports facilities. A meeting is also planned with the CSS Lugoj soccer team, which is taking part in the tenth international D-junior soccer tournament at the Ernst Abbe sports field this coming weekend.
Finally, the guests will visit the university summer festival on Friday evening.
