Wednesday (21.06.) + Thursday (22.06.): Official heat warning

19.06.2023

The German Weather Service has issued an official warning of strong heat for Thuringia and thus also for Jena. The warning is valid for Wednesday (21.06.2023) and Thursday (22.06.2023) from 11:00 to 19:00. According to the weather service, Jena is likely to be particularly affected because temperatures in the densely built-up urban area cool down less at night.

Because heat waves pose a serious risk to health, three basic rules should be observed during the heat phase:

1. avoid the heat.

  • Do not go into direct sunlight.
  • Do not go outside during the hottest part of the day (in the afternoon).
  • Postpone physical activity outdoors until early in the morning.

2. keep your home cool.

  • Ventilate only when it is cooler outside than inside (during the night and early morning).
  • Avoid direct sunlight.
  • Draw the curtains.

3. keep your body cool and make sure you drink enough fluids and electrolytes.

  • Wear light, airy clothing and a hat.
  • Take a cool shower.
  • Drink enough and regularly and eat light meals.

If you look after people who need help or care, make sure that they also follow the basic rules. If you or others experience unusual health problems such as circulatory problems, headaches or vomiting, contact a doctor.

Please also look out for elderly people living alone in your neighborhood.

Various stores, restaurants and points of contact in the city offer a free refill service for your own water bottles so that you always have enough to drink when you are out and about. The Refill Germany website provides an overview.
