Well-attended event on the planned streetcar extension

27.06.2025

The hybrid information event on the construction project "New Jena-Nord tramway with conversion of Naumburger Straße" was well attended: around 100 people took part digitally and a further 14 followed the broadcast in the departmental building at Am Anger 26.

The city of Jena, Jenaer Nahverkehr and the commissioned engineering firm HI Bauprojekt GmbH presented the project and the next steps and answered questions from participants.

The construction project

In the next phase of the streetcar expansion in Jena-Nord, the ground-up expansion of Naumburger Straße with an extension of the streetcar line is planned. This is due to start in October 2025. The construction project extends from the junction at the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut to the end of the town at Carl-Orff-Straße and is divided into two construction areas:

  • Construction area 1: Carl-Orff-Straße to Nietzschestraße
  • Construction area 2: Nietzschestraße to Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut

As part of the project, the ancillary facilities for pedestrians and cyclists will also be newly built or supplemented. The installation of new street lighting is also planned. Numerous new trees are to be planted.

Questions from the audience

In addition to the plans, the participants were particularly interested in the restrictions during the construction period. Concerns were expressed about the noise pollution caused by the construction work and along the detour routes. Measures such as the creation of safe crossings for pedestrians and cyclists as well as speed limits with appropriate controls along the detour routes were also requested. Safety in the area of the kindergarten in Leibnizstraße was also discussed.

Other questions concerned the accessibility of properties and parking options during the construction period as well as possible restrictions for public transport passengers. The future frequency of the streetcar service after completion of the overall project and possible park-and-ride facilities at the city limits were also of interest.

The suggestions and requests were taken on board and are now being examined.

Background

The Jena-Nord streetcar extension has been planned for some time. The planning approval procedure was completed on August 30, 2017. The first construction phase - from Camburger Straße to the Friedrich Loeffler Institute - took place between 2018 and 2020. After funding was secured and subsidies were approved, further planning could be resumed in 2022. The next construction phase is due to start in October 2025. First, section 2 - from the end of the town to Nietzschestraße - will be expanded until around mid-2027, followed by the expansion of Nietzschestraße to the junction with Friedrich-Löffler-Institut. The work is expected to end in 2029.
