Wiesenstraße/Brückenstraße junction becomes a traffic circle
The State Administration Office in Weimar has granted the city of Jena approval to convert the Wiesenstraße/Brückenstraße junction into a flood-proof traffic circle. The associated planning approval decision will remain on public display in the city administration building at Am Anger 28 in room 01_00_05 at the Department of Urban Development until 22.01.2024.
"The new traffic circle will be able to handle traffic more safely and efficiently. With a view to our goal of relieving Jena's northern area of through traffic in the future, the traffic circle is an important first construction measure," says Lord Mayor Thomas Nitzsche.
The conversion will not only significantly improve the accessibility of the Zwätzen-Nord industrial estate in the event of flooding, but will also considerably reduce the risk of flooding of the industrial properties. The construction of crossing aids and crosswalks fulfills a long-standing demand from the Kunitz district. The long-standing accident blackspot will be eliminated and the safety of pedestrians and cyclists will be improved, especially on the way to school.
"In order to finally be able to tackle the northern extension of the tramway from 2025 with the federal funds that have already been approved, we urgently need an efficient and flood-proof detour route via Wiesenstraße. In this sense, the expansion of the Wiesenstraße/Brückenstraße junction in 2024 is also an important prerequisite for further strengthening Jena's public transport network. All planning preparations for this have been made. Funding for the measure has been secured and the Free State funding applied for by the city has been approved," said Mayor and Head of Urban Development and Environment Christian Gerlitz.
