Work on the district heating pipe in Johannisstraße

Stadtwerke Jena Netze is beginning the final construction phase for the relocation of a district heating pipeline from Eichplatz to Johannisstraße. From Monday, January 29, the remaining work postponed from last year will be carried out. Weather permitting, the work should be completed by the end of March. This means that the new work should cause as little disruption as possible to outdoor catering and visitors to the spring market in the city center.

Work is being carried out in parallel at three points in Johannisstrasse. In the eastern part of Johannisstraße (roughly between the Waffelstübchen and Bike&Snow), around 45 meters of new district heating pipe will be laid and connected to the existing pipe in Weigelstraße. At the same time, work is being carried out in front of the house numbers Johannisstraße 17 and Johannisstraße 20/21/22. So-called head holes are being dug in the street there in order to either install new district heating house connections or to connect them to the new pipeline.

The usable road width in Johannisstraße will again be restricted due to the construction work, pedestrians will have to pass the construction site, cyclists will have to dismount. Stadtwerke asks for your understanding.

Once the work has been completed, the district heating supply will need to be interrupted for a short time to connect the new section of pipeline to the network. Stadtwerke will inform the affected customers in good time.

The construction work in Johannisstraße is connected to the planned development of Eichplatz. In preparation for this development, Stadtwerke Jena Netze will have to relocate a number of supply lines from Eichplatz to Johannisstrasse and Weigelstrasse. Now that the work on the electricity and gas lines, IT cables and drinking water pipes has been completed, the largest and most challenging part of the project is currently underway with the relocation of the main district heating line.

The background:

The construction work for the first construction site A of the Eichplatz area, which includes three high-rise buildings, is to be carried out on Eichplatz. To clear the construction site, archaeological excavations were already carried out on Eichplatz in 2022 and Stadtwerke Jena Netze relocated sewers in Kollegiengasse, at the foot of JenTower and in a smaller section in Johannisstraße. Last year, Stadtwerke Jena Netze worked on the relocation of gas, electricity and drinking water pipes as well as the installation of a new district heating pipeline in Johannisstrasse and Weigelstrasse in order to replace a main pipeline running across Eichplatz.
