World AIDS Day this year under the motto: Living with HIV. Different than you think?
World AIDS Day has been held on December 1 every year for more than 30 years. It affirms the rights of HIV-positive people worldwide and calls for people to live together without prejudice and exclusion. It commemorates the people who have died as a result of the infection.
This year's campaign "Living with HIV. Different than you think?" aims to promote solidarity with people with HIV and AIDS and counteract discrimination. Today, people with HIV can live like everyone else.
According to the Robert Koch Institute, the number of new HIV infections has fallen in the last 15 years. Around 1,900 people were infected with HIV in Germany in 2022. The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was first described 40 years ago and identified as the cause of the immunodeficiency syndrome AIDS. There have been outstanding medical successes in HIV treatment. In Germany, medication is available for both treatment and prophylaxis for all people with health insurance. HIV is also no longer transmissible under therapy.
Condoms offer the best protection
New study data from the Federal Centre for Health Education on contraceptive behavior in 2023 show that the condom is replacing the pill as the number one contraceptive. At 53%, the condom is used significantly more often than the pill for contraception for the first time since 2007 (36%). This fundamental change in contraceptive behavior is based on an increasingly critical attitude towards hormonal contraceptive methods. It also provides the best possible protection against sexually transmitted diseases.
Action day in Jena
HIV prevention is very successful, but we must not let up. For this reason, the network "vielfältig l(i)eben in Jena" is once again organizing a day of action for Jena schools on Friday, 1.12. to mark World AIDS Day. There will be 5 stations on various topics relating to sexual health for registered school classes.
In the foyer of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena on Ernst-Abbe-Platz there will be an information stand of the Jena Health Service from 09:00 to 14:00.
Putting your own knowledge to the test, becoming aware of prejudices and correcting them - this is what the day of action is intended to encourage.
