A world without nuclear weapons
80 years ago, atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. To mark this occasion, the Jena Peace Group, in cooperation with the city of Jena, is presenting a poster exhibition by the international alliance "Mayors for Peace".
Prof. Dr. Manuel Vogel from the University of Jena will speak at the opening on Friday, September 19, at 6 p.m. in the historic town hall, accompanied by musical contributions on the piano by Eva-Maria Weinreich and Tomohito Nakaishi. Head of Cultural Affairs Johannes Schleußner will give a welcoming address. The exhibition will then be on display until October 28, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm in the Rathausdiele.
The exhibition shows harrowing images documenting the devastating effects of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 and Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. These images are not only historical testimonies, but also a powerful reminder of the horrors of nuclear war. They are a reminder of the countless victims and the lasting physical and psychological wounds of the survivors.
Background:
The "Mayors for Peace" alliance was founded in 1982 by the then mayor of Hiroshima, Takeshi Araki, and now comprises more than 8,000 cities and municipalities from 166 countries, including more than 900 cities in Germany. Jena has been a member of this network since 2006. The Jena peace group and the "Mayors for Peace" alliance are actively committed to the abolition of nuclear weapons and would like to raise awareness of peace and disarmament through this exhibition.
