Kulturarena Jena 2021

This year's Kulturarena will take place from July 21 to August 15 on Jena's Theatervorplatz. Before that, we look forward to the opening ArenaOuverture with the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra on the fairground in Lobeda and the annual summer theater from 9 to 17July at the traditional location directly in front of the local theater.

The four planned concert weeks will also be accompanied by the popular open-air film evenings and a children's arena in the charming ambience of the MoMoLo circus. Detailed information on the theater spectacle and an initial selection of the planned concerts can be found further down in this news item. There will be a separate event with the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra and extensive information for you on the planned ArenaOuverture.

Despite everything, the challenges behind such an announcement should not go unmentioned. For several months now, those involved in the Kulturarena have been working tirelessly to ensure that the summer festival can take place at all. The pandemic-related restrictions and effects, impassable, constantly changing conditions, missing or inadequate signals from politics to culture and also the neighboring major construction site on Engelplatz have kept the entire team on their toes and made fixed planning almost impossible.

Some restrictions are unavoidable so that we can meet up in the summer for a few pleasant hours on the theater forecourt. The important infection protection rules therefore play a particularly important role in our planning and reduce the arena to its usual extent. This summer, there will therefore only be seated concerts during the Kulturarena and the audience capacity will also be lower than usual. At the moment, we are unable to say whether catering will be available at all, as the chances of this are currently very slim. Our focus at the moment is on protecting all guests and the shared concert experience we are aiming for. "We are happy and grateful to be able to plan a cultural arena for this summer at all. We all miss the shared live experience of culture and if compromises are necessary to achieve this, we accept them and make the best of it for our artists and guests," reports Kristjan Schmitt, our production manager.

This time, advance ticket sales will start at the end of May at the earliest, so that our offer to guests can be guaranteed with a little more planning security. Our production manager sums up the current situation: "Openness, curiosity and understanding can be particularly important companions for the planned Kulturarena. We are already looking forward to the hours together, to which we cordially invite our guests! However, we will not be able to tell you the exact organizational procedures regarding ticketing, admission and the concert situation until a later date, as our plans will certainly have to be completely rethought more than once due to the dynamic developments."

But what we can already tell you today: We are doing everything we can to ensure that there will be a 29th Kulturarena this year and look forward to every step, however small, that leads us to this goal.

Best wishes from the ArenaTeam

The clowns are back! At a multilingual conference, a group of international clowns search for a way out of the crisis. Can the clowns save humanity from its doom? With their patent on humour, are they the last line of defence against general polarization?

For the production "Der Clowns-Kongress", the actors from Theaterhaus Jena and Wunderbaum get into their clown costumes and set off in search of their inner clown. They investigate whether their clowns are still relevant against the backdrop of the rise of horror clowns and the end of circuses. Is their reputation in danger? Are they still taken seriously? Does society still need clowns as a mirror of itself? In the style of a UN conference, they are striving for a joint action plan to save themselves and the world.

We want you to join our army

And if you think we are just clowns you're wrong

You are the biggest clown yourself!
