Young kestrels fledge

24.07.2023

It's that time again: the kestrel offspring that the parents at Am Anger 15 have been nurturing over the last few weeks are fledging! For the little falcons, this is the step towards independence. Naturally, this means that the young birds are now increasingly moving around outside the protected breeding site and practising flying. These days, they can be seen sitting on the backs of benches, bicycle stands, railings or simply on the ground everywhere in our "administrative district". Once again: this behavior is completely normal and marks a stage of life that every "growing" kestrel has to go through alone. Incidentally, the young birds are still provided with food by their parents during this time - even outside the breeding site.

On this occasion, we ask you to observe the following 3 rules of conduct:

  • please leave the young birds undisturbed on the spot

  • Avoid approaching them unnecessarily (e.g. for photos); if you have chosen to sit on your own bicycle seat in the afternoon, please consider using public transport for the journey home.

And above all

  • please do not try to catch the animals!

By observing these rules of conduct, you are helping "our" little kestrels to become independent.

For the little falcons, every attempt to catch them - even if it is well-intentioned - means one thing above all: unimaginable stress. Especially in such situations, the animals try to flee frantically and run the risk of running or flying in front of passing cars or against glass panes in their panic, which almost always ends in serious injury or death. In contrast, they almost always cope well with the normal processes and dangers in the "urban jungle".

So let's all be happy about this year's breeding success and give the young falcons the peace and quiet they need to grow up!
