Corona - Jena crisis team calls for caution

14.10.2022

Use vaccinations, indoor masks, and distance to protect against infection.

Currently, the incidences of Covid-19 infections in Germany and Jena are on the rise again. The colder weather means that people are moving closer together, making it easier for them to become infected. In addition, the cold season means that many infections go undetected. At present, the course of the disease is usually very mild. Nevertheless, work absences due to illness and isolation are noticeable in all areas, more and more social institutions are affected with outbreaks, and bed utilization in hospitals is increasing.

The crisis team of the city of Jena therefore calls on the population to actively protect themselves against infection. This includes the voluntary wearing of masks indoors and especially the use of the vaccination offers against the currently prevailing omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This applies in particular to people over 60 years of age, nursing home residents, staff of medical facilities and the immunocompromised .

Current vaccination options in Jena can befound on the website of the city of Jena .

The vaccination center of the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians of Thuringia at Grietgasse 6 offers vaccination appointments from Wednesday to Saturday, which can be booked onthe Thuringia Vaccination Portal .

Mayor Christian Gerlitz: "In Jena, we have intensively supported the vaccination campaign in recent months - with success. The statistics show that especially our elderly residents in Jena have come through the past Corona waves safer. Therefore, my appeal: check your vaccination status and thus protect yourself and those around you!"

The head of the Corona Crisis Staff of the city of Jena, Benjamin Koppe, explains: "We have reactivated the working structure of the staff, which deals with the senior and nursing facilities, and are now again increasingly entering into exchange with the facilities. The vaccine, which has meanwhile been adapted to the coronavirus variant Omikron, should above all also offer the best possible protection to the residents and staff in the retirement homes. Thegoal must be to avoid anursing emergency and serious illness among the elderly duringthe winter months . "

Health Department Director Dr. Enikö Bán sums up the current situation: "Mask indoors, keep your distance and vaccinate are the effective measures of the hour again this fall."

The Corona situation picture for Jena (as of 10/12/2022).

In the last 7 days, 812 new infections with the SARS-CoV-2 virus were transmitted by the specialist health service to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). This corresponds to a weekly trend of infections of + 60 %.

This increase confirms the Germany-wide trend (+ 72 % compared to last week). The number of inpatients from Jena with a positive Covid 19 laboratory result remained stable. Across Thuringia, the figure is rising continuously.

Due to the beginning of the flu season and the mostly mild courses of the omicron variant of the virus, many Covid19 infections remain undetected. Therefore, a higher number of infected persons must be assumed.

Outbreak events have been reported from six social institutions.

In the past week, 245 positive rapid tests were transmitted by the testing centers. These figures are also passed on to the RKI, but are not included in the statistics.
