Commemorative events on June 17, 2023
The people's uprising on 17.06.2023 against the political and economic conditions in the GDR will be 70 years old in 2023. The central act of commemoration for Thuringia will take place in Jena. The program includes two public events to which interested parties are cordially invited.
17.06.2023, 10.15 a.m. - Unveiling of an information board.
Place: Intersection Theobald-Renner-Strasse / Alfred-Diener-Strasse
Alfred Diener, a locksmith, took part in demonstrations against the political leadership in Jena in 1953. The then 27-year-old was arrested and executed one day later in Weimar. Since 1993, a street in Jena's Neulobeda district has borne his name. On the initiative of students from the nearby Otto Schott High School, a new information board has been created and will be unveiled on the anniversary.

June 17, 2023, 11:00 a.m. - Wreath-laying ceremony
Place: Gerbergasse
At the memorial for those politically persecuted between 1945 and 1989, State Parliament President Birgit Pommer and Minister Prof. Dr. Benjamin-Immanuel Hoff, head of the Thuringian State Chancellery, will lay a wreath.
Speeches will be given by Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche and the State Commissioner of the Free State of Thuringia for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship, Dr. Peter Wurschi.
