Ernst-Abbe-Platz is being redesigned to suit the climate

18.03.2024

The federal government's funding decision for the "Climate-adapted redesign of Ernst-Abbe-Platz" was received in Jena on March 18, 2024. 85% of the total costs will be covered by the federal government from the federal program "Adaptation of urban spaces to climate change".

"With the binding funding decision of 6.3 million euros, we now have the certainty that the most difficult heat hotspot in Jena's urban area can be redesigned in a climate-adapted way and with a high quality of stay. The renovation of Ernst-Abbe-Platz was previously the only Jena project with federal funding that was affected by a budget freeze following the ruling of the Federal Constitutional Court. Of course, I am all the more pleased that we can now begin detailed planning together with Friedrich Schiller University and the people of Jena. A big thank you goes to Federal Building Minister Klara Geywitz and the Jena members of parliament who have made this funding possible ," said Christian Gerlitz, Mayor and Head of the Department for Urban Development and the Environment.

Designed in the 1990s, Ernst-Abbe-Platz is one of the most important open spaces in the city center. However, due to its outdated design and materials, it has long since ceased to fulfill its role, also in view of the changing climatic conditions. On April 12, 2024, the city is inviting people to a first major workshop as part of the public participation process. Information about the project and the participation process will soon be available on the website https://mitmachen.jena.de .
