Larger and safer: Jena's cycle path network is growing

18.01.2024

The city of Jena presents the new 2035+ cycling plan. The aim of the new plan was to develop a cycling network that connects all areas of the city and residential areas with key workplaces, schools, important public transport stops, leisure destinations and everyday destinations (shopping, shopping, restaurants, etc.) and also links these destinations with each other.

By drawing up a prioritized programme of measures with an estimated cost framework, a basis for decision-making was created for politicians and administrators, which can be used to determine investment programmes and provide budget funds. The planned cycle route network amounts to approx. 270 km and is divided into approx. 250 route-related and approx. 110 point-related measures.

The point-related measures primarily serve to improve road safety at junctions and intersections. In these two categories, 50 measures are planned. These include the removal of installations such as bollards and the like (16 measures). The route-related measures include the construction of 40 new cycle paths/cycle path sections over a length of 25 km. Another focus is the creation of cycle lanes with 26 planned roads or road sections over a length of 21 km. The residents of the local district councils will be extensively involved in the planning process. In addition, the passability of existing paths and roads will be improved by improving the surfaces. A total of 45 measures are planned in the 4 assigned categories (e.g. asphalting, renovation of damaged areas).

"The Radentscheid Jena initiative sees this cycling plan as an important step in the development of cycling infrastructure in Jena through new ambitious connections and a large number of smaller measures. Nevertheless, we still see potential for development in this cycling plan in order to enable a broad section of the population to cycle safely and comfortably. In order for the intention of the cycling decision to be fulfilled, cycling in Jena must become a real alternative in the sense of freedom of choice of means of transport," says Michael Böhringer from the cycling decision.

In order to achieve the broadest possible participation, several working groups were held, two online participations were carried out and further participations were held with public bodies, district councils and advisory boards. Comments and feedback were recorded and the resulting changes were presented transparently.

"I am delighted that the new Cycling Plan 2035+ is now available. Thanks to the broad participation of a wide range of stakeholders, it was possible to incorporate important information and suggestions. This made it possible to better localize potential problem areas in the road network and develop appropriate solutions. Many thanks to everyone who contributed their knowledge and commitment to this process," says Mayor and Head of Urban Development and Environment Christian Gerlitz.
