"Living in Jena 2024" survey evaluated
Jena households are predominantly very satisfied - there are many wishes for improvement

A comprehensive survey was carried out in Jena in the fall of 2023 to record the needs of citizens in various areas of life. To this end, 10,000 residents were contacted in order to obtain detailed information on the social, economic and health situation in the city.

Details:

The sample comprised people with their main residence in Jena. A representative random sample was drawn according to age, gender and planning area. Of the 10,000 people contacted, 2,517 took part, which corresponds to a response rate of 25%. The survey is therefore representative of the city of light.

Life in Jena is predominantly perceived as positive. On average, life satisfaction was rated at 74 out of 100 scale points. Satisfaction with family and partnership reached 85 scale points. Satisfaction with income scored lower (66 scale points). Satisfaction with the existing home also achieved an excellent value of 78 scale points.

Differences can be seen in the various age groups, but also according to the residential area. For example, participants from West/Central tend to rate family friendliness as the best (71 scale points). In the villages and the large residential areas of Lobeda and Winzerla, the average value is 66 scale points. Younger people rate family friendliness higher than older people. People with a migration background also awarded more points for this aspect. Equally interesting here: Compared to the "Living in Jena 2018" study, family friendliness is rated higher in the current study.

In addition to the surveyed values, around 10,000 individual suggestions were mentioned in free text fields. These included many wishes for improved public transport connections and more green space in the residential area.

Head of Social Affairs Eberhard Hertzsch was positively surprised by the results of the survey. "Jena is a good place to live. The cohesion in the family and in the neighborhood works and is rated highly by the households surveyed. However, many wishes for improvement also show that further efforts are needed to implement aspects of daily life such as the accessibility of public offices or improvements in the immediate living environment."

About the survey:

COBUS Marktforschung GmbH was commissioned to carry out and evaluate the study. This survey serves as the basis for the further development of the LSZ (state program for living together in solidarity) specialist plan, the city of Jena's poverty prevention strategy and integration management. Financial support was provided by the ESF+ and the Free State of Thuringia.
