Jena takes part in Earth Hour 2024
City of Jena takes part in Earth Hour on 23.03.2024
The city of Jena is taking part in Earth Hour for the 13th time this year. This will take place on Saturday, 23.03.2024. People, cities and companies around the world will follow the WWF's call and switch off the lights from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm. In doing so, they are sending out a signal for more commitment to climate protection and backing the basic democratic values of peaceful and colorful coexistence.
During Earth Hour, the city of Jena will not illuminate public buildings such as schools, social and administrative buildings, the historic town hall, the public swimming pool, the Villa Rosenthal and the city wall ensemble as well as the yard lighting on the premises of the KSJ and recycling centers (subject to change).
Everyone who wants to is invited to take part in Earth Hour 2024 and switch off the lights for an hour. It is also possible to register at wwf.de/earth-hour(link is external) to show how many people are taking part.
The background
In recent years, thousands of cities in 192 countries have taken part. In Germany alone, 579 cities and municipalities took part in 2023.
In Germany, the 2024 global campaign will once again focus on climate protection. This year, the focus is once again on the federal government, as Germany is lagging behind in the expansion of renewables and the heating and transportation transition is stalling. And money is still flowing into fossil fuel structures instead of accelerating the transformation. 2024 must finally spark the necessary momentum to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees and avert devastating consequences for humans and animals.
The Hour in the Dark also symbolizes the importance of each and every individual for climate protection and aims to motivate people to adopt climate-friendly behaviour in their everyday lives. The campaign shows: Even seemingly small actions can have a significant impact when taken together.
