Temporary chlorination at Burgau waterworks

19.11.2022

Press release of Stadtwerke Jena Netze

In the supply area of the Burgau waterworks, minor microbiological abnormalities were detected at several points during routine water tests, the cause of which could not yet be determined beyond doubt. In consultation with the Jena Health Department, an additional chlorine dosage was therefore put into operation at the Burgau waterworks on Saturday, November 19, 2022, as a precautionary measure to ensure drinking water quality. Normally, the drinking water in the waterworks is disinfected exclusively by means of UV irradiation.

The water may have the odor or taste typical of chlorine. However, there is no danger to health, so that the water can continue to be used as usual. The dosing of chlorine is a common disinfection process in drinking water supply, but was already replaced by the installation of UV irradiation at the Burgau waterworks in 2009. The Burgau waterworks supplies a large part of Jena's city center, the northern and eastern districts, and the community of Großlöbichau.

Stadtwerke Jena Netze asks all affected customers for their understanding. If you have any questions, please contact the company at 03641/688-888.
