Transition to the new departmental regulations of the City of Jena

29.08.2024

At its meeting on 21.08.2024, the City Council of the City of Jena approved the amendment to the main statutes and paved the way for the city administration to have four deputies in addition to the Lord Mayor instead of the previous three. The following regulations will now come into force on a transitional basis until the regular appointment of new deputies:

With effect from 01.09.2024, the Lord Mayor will additionally assign Mayor Christian Gerlitz the portfolio of Department 2, as Benjamin Koppe will be leaving his position as Alderman for Finance, Security and Citizen Services on 31.08.2024. This assignment will end at the latest on 31.01.2025, the date on which Christian Gerlitz leaves the office of Mayor of the City of Jena.

As the employment of Head of Department Eberhard Hertzsch for the Department of Family, Youth, Education and Social Affairs will also end on 31.08.2024, Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche will take over this division himself on a transitional basis from 01.09.2024 until 30.09.2024.

The next steps until the position is filled with new aldermen

The aldermanic positions for the areas of education, youth, culture and sport as well as social affairs, health, immigration and climate are to be filled on 01.10.2024. The deputies for Urban Development and Environment and for Finance, Security and Citizen Services will be appointed on February 1, 2025. The office of Mayor will also be filled on 01.2.2025.

Once all applications have been received by 12.08.2024, the specialist personnel department will screen suitable candidates as part of the orderly selection process. The Lord Mayor will then propose a suitable selection of candidates to the City Council on this basis.

At the meeting on 18.9.2024, the City Council will decide on the new aldermen in an election.
