Two cases of measles in Jena

12.06.2019

Two cases of measles have recently occurred in Jena. These are an adult and a schoolchild who were not vaccinated against measles.

The health department is currently identifying the contact persons of the infected persons. After assessing the vaccination status, the affected persons will receive individual advice. If there is insufficient vaccination protection, these people will be excluded from attending community facilities such as schools, daycare centers, sports clubs, music schools and public events. This is to prevent the spread of the disease.

In this context, the health department urgently advises all citizens to check their vaccination against measles. Vaccination is the only way to protect yourself and others from infection and prevent the spread of the disease.

Two vaccinations against measles are considered sufficient protection. In recent years, the recommended combination vaccine against mumps, measles and rubella (MMR) has usually been used. People born before 1970 are assumed to have existing immunity, as these cohorts usually contracted measles in childhood.

Measles is a very contagious viral disease that is transmitted via droplets (coughing, sneezing). The disease begins with flu-like symptoms before the rash typical of measles appears after 3 to 7 days. In some cases, the disease can lead to far-reaching complications. (inflammation of the middle ear, lungs or meninges).

Due to the good vaccination coverage of the population in Thuringia, only a few cases occurred in 2019; a total of 448 cases have been reported across Germany to date.
